Counselor's Corner: Ms. Karen Wilson

Welcome back students, parents, teachers, faculty, and staff. We are off to a wonderful start, and I would like to share the following very important information with you:

Building Character: Remember, you are your child's moral role model. Like it or not, what you do sends powerful messages to your child about the kind of person he/she should be. For example, cleaning up litter teaches respect for property and environment, and sticking with a difficult project teaches the value of hard work.

What is BBSST? The building-Based Student Support Team is a best practice, problem-solving team, implemented at the local level and statewide in all Alabama public schools as part of the Lee v. Macon Consent Decree. Teachers identify students with learning or behavior difficulties, meet with other grade level teachers to devise a grade level support plan, and implement and document classroom intervention. If a student fails to show progress, a BBSST pre-referral is completed.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act 1973

This act is a broad civil rights law which protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance from the US Department of Education. It is an anti-discrimination statue, and it does not apply to all students.
